what happens when Yash Raj Films decides to put together a popular star cast and run musical promos only to increase curiosity? What happens when the Khiladi reunites with his Anari? What happens when one of the most versatile actors in India is submerged to speaking very bad English? What happens when you see Kareena in a bikini? But of course, TASHAN (meaning STYLE), ISHTYLE, THE GOOD LUCK, THE PHARMOOLA.

I was smart enough to shut off my brain before watching the movie and ended up laughing a few times intentionally and unintentionally. The absurd film begins with a (cool) call center executive/English professor, Jimmy Cliff (Saif Ali Khan), who instantaneously falls for Pooja Singh (Kareena Kapoor) when she asks him to teach her boss English.

The boss in question is one Lakhan Singh aka Bhaiyyaji (Anil Kapoor), who is obsessed with learning English, for reasons that are unclear. We see Mother Goose rhymes being butchered while Pooja and Jimmy slowly fall in love. However, all is not well in paradise. We soon learn that Pooja is under a big debt of Bhaiyyaji and the duo love birds decide to steal a little money from him (because he has so much and wouldn’t notice) and runaway. There is a little glitch in this fantastic plan, as Jimmy learns that he’s been made a fool and Pooja disappears with the money. Now Bhaiyyaji is mad and through his bad English, hires Bachchan Pande (Akshay Kumar) to go with Jimmy to find Pooja and his money. The journey across India begins…with TASHAN.

I was expecting something dynamic from the writer of the Dhoom films, but I was disappointed by the story of Vijay Krishna Acharya. The movie turns into a bizarre revenge drama that ends up evoking more laughter than I thought. The action sequences end up being comical for no reason. There is no demand for histronics, but the direction comes off as disorganized. The script is sore on all fronts and the dialogues are cheezy and over the top.

Technically, the camerawork and cinematography are the highlights of the film. Moreover, I liked that each character was given their own style, even though some costumes were questionable. Music by Vishal-Shekhar is very average, but you’ll thoroughly enjoy ‘Dil Haara’ and ‘Chhaliya’ on the screen as music videos.

Overall acting leaves much to be desired. Kareena Kapoor is fine and confident with her toned body but one prefers her more subdued roles. Saif Ali Khan seems misused and miscast in the movie. Akshay Kumar is the scene stealer in every frame, by being comical and natural. It was interesting to see Anil Kapoor as a villain but unfortunately he ends up looking like a cheap cartoon character with red hair. The main trio have no real chemistry and that is the biggest disappointment.

Yash Raj Films has a particular TASHAN over the last few years; releasing nonsensical movies to get the cash registers rolling; very bad PHARMOOLA. 'Me not liking this TASHAN.'
