Is it me, or has it been a weird year for Bollywood movies? There have been very few entertaining films, especially comedies. Back in the day, any David Dhawan starring Govinda had the Midas touch at the box office. In recent years, Akshay Kumar has proven himself to be a solid bet as an actor and performer. Moreover, Anees Bazmee has written some funny films and directed recent hits like No Entry and Welcome. So what can we expect from this combo? Yes folks…pure, nonsensical entertainment. We can all breathe a sigh of relief…at last.
For a while, I was starting to lose faith by watching all these ridiculous films, merely looking forward to just the biggies releasing later this year. Back in the 90s, the main Khans (Aamir, Shah Rukh, and Salman) ruled Bollywood, while the others had no real appeal and were not taken seriously. Times have changed. That era is long gone and Akshay waited patiently to prove to the world that he was a force to be reckoned with. His popularity increased only a few years ago, but Singh is Kinng proves that he can really entertain on his own star power and does not need big production houses to back him. Kudos to him!
Singh is Kinng is silliness at its best. It begins the moment you see Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar) chasing after a hen and destroying half the village with his clumsiness. The villagers are fed up and trick him into going to Australia to bring back Lucky Singh (Sonu Sood), who is now a notorious don (aka King). Rangeela (Om Puri), who is Happy’s best friend, is forced to accompany him on his journey and misadventures.
Along the way, we see Happy acquaint with Sonia (Katrina Kaif), who he falls in love with. He also runs into a nice shop lady (Kiron Kher) and befriends Lucky’s henchmen, ridding them of their criminal ways. He’s just such a lovable character with a good heart. The story is nothing extraordinary, but the screenplay is so fast paced and fun that you just sit back and enjoy the events on the screen. The whole point of the movie is to see if Happy manages to bring Lucky back to India, and how he accidently replaces the King.
From the first shot of Australia, we can see that the production values are high, including the excellent cinematography. The action is fast, but the editing is jerky at times, as if scenes were quickly put together.
Music by Pritam is already a rage and with just reason; it adds the perfect punjabi flavour to the movie. Every song is like a music video and very well choreographed, with Bhootni Ke and Jee Karda getting the most whistles in the cinema. Don’t worry, you’ll see Snoop Dogg at the end for the addictive Singh is Kinng song.
It’s clear, Akshay is a natural at comedy. As Happy Singh, he eases into the role and is hilarious, melting your heart as the amiably authentic punjabi buffoon. Katrina Kaif is gorgeous and she shares natural chemistry with Akshay. A winning pair, but hopefully, she gets a chance to show some real acting skills soon rather than just being eye-candy. Om Puri is back in form as the funny sidekick, and Kiron Kher is always dependable. Sonu Sood keeps improving with each film. The secondary characters are all adequate, including Neha Dhupia, who manages to be decent in her role. Unfortunately, Javed Jaffrey is irritating and Ranveer Shorey is completely miscast.
Anees Bazmee is a funny storyteller and as time goes on, we all should look forward to more outrageous movies to come from him. The audience is left in stitches during several moments, with the main highlight being Ranveer Shorey being chased by popular Bollywood actors. Genius! One can easily overlook the flaws of this movie because it’s guaranteed to be this summer’s biggest blockbuster.
Singh is Kinng is a great watch. Enjoy the happy atmosphere while cheering on the new King of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar.
