Directed by K Murali Mohan Rao and starring Suniel Shetty, Ashish Chowdhry, Aftab Shivdasani, Aarti Chhabria, Tulip Joshi, Javed Jaffrey, Kim Sharma amongst others; Daddy Cool is an agonizing and disastrous desi remake of the satirical Hollywood film Death At A Funeral. With a shoddy plot and runtime of 1hr and 15min, the film is all about the atrocious affairs of a funeral house.

The first half of the movie is spent with the arrival of family and friends. While things get messy with each arrival, the worst is on when a friend reveals a dark secret about the deceased. Post interval portions are all about resolving the issues and finally paying respect to the deceased.

The movie falls flat beginning with the initial reels. Basically, the setting and the story is not suited for our tadka desi audience. The film is an exact replica and fails miserably to deliver even a tad bit of hilarity or entertainment of the original. Adding to the pain of a sloppy story are the pathetic performances by the character actors. While they try extremely hard to evoke laughter, they probably succeeded a couple of times, but that's about it.

Suniel Shetty tries hard, but fails. Jaaved Jaffery is good at times. Among the rest of the cast, some have nothing to do, others who have, ham!

Overall Daddy Cool is a dud, a B-grade film that doesn't deserve a watch, neither in theatres nor on DVD.

Why remake a shoddy, tasteless British comedy? Why be so fixated on Western entertainment when we've so much literary and pulp talent out here?

Just leave aside these vital questions and focus on the ensemble cast of "Daddy Cool" that sparkles with borrowed wit. The Goan setting and the quaint rooms housing distraught emotions keep us smiling.

The setting is a Christian funeral. But at times the funeral jokes have us coughing in embarrassment. The dead man has two sons - a responsible, young bespectacled householder (Suniel Shetty) and a carefree cassanova novelist (Ashish Chowdhary) who flies in jetlagged just in time for daddy's funeral.

And Sharad Saxena is deadly in his stillness as the dead man.

Interestingly, daddy has a secret in his closet. And that's Rajpal Yadav, his gay lover.

"Isska matlab tum dono gay ke bete ho!" squeals Aarti Chabria to her screen-husband Suniel Shetty and his brother Ashish.

Ironically after copying everything in sight in the original - from the characters to the dialogues - the desi adaptors get cold feet and decide the gay lover was an imposter.

To be fair to this feisty farce, "Daddy Cool" makes you smile, specially Aftab Shivdasani as a drugged-out goofy lover-boy. He is better than the actor who played the role originally.

Shetty as the responsible son, who is a little tired of shouldering family responsibilitie but nonetheless determined to see the show through, is controlled and comically karmic. His climactic speech in praise of his father is rousing. Rajpal Yadav as the gay lover is superbly restrained.

And then there's Sophie Chowdhary as the suitably sexy airhead.

Blessedly this farce doesn't opt for desperate measures. It keeps it cool most of the way.

TOSS

The basic problem in this film is that despite being a thriller, it's not racy enough to make you forget your popcorn and have you glued to the screen. In fact the narrative is uneven, mainly in the first half.

On a positive side though, "Toss" gets to the point right in the opening scene. The basic plot of five friends getting hold Rs.20 crore that originally belonged to criminals (Mahesh Manjrekar and Sushant Singh) is established well and you start believing that a roller coaster ride is about to begin.

Rajpal Yadav's entry and subsequent murder is done well but then the story starts drifting away.

A couple of nightmare sequences come one after another and it seemS like a seen-it-before TV suspense drama. A Punjabi dance number only applies a speed breaker to the narrative. Not just that, the entire track featuring Rannvijay and his girlfriend Shruti Gera starts becoming repetitive after a point.

This is where Mahesh Manjrekar and Sushant Singh bring some spice to the proceedings. Along with their kid brother, they set out on a hunt for the missing booty that brings the film back on track. The cards start unfolding and with Zakir Hussain joining the scene, it becomes a three-way thriller that also takes the shape of a 'whodunit'.

What appeared to be a simple game turns out to be lethal with each of the five lead protagonists turning out to be different than what he/she was perceived to be. No one can be trusted anymore as dead bodies start piling up. The climax is decently done too though it comes at least 20 minutes after one would have imagined the film to have concluded. Also, it isn't one of those zany thrillers and remains dark throughout.

However, with the kind of subject and basic plotline in hand, writer-director Khatkar could have done much better. In fact even the choice of actors could have helped. Of the three leading ladies, the one who makes some impression is Aarti Chhabria. She plays the role of a conniving woman well.

Prashant Raj is in good form, especially in the second half. It's surprising he hasn't been seen in any film post his 'Jai' act in "Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag". Ashmit Patel does decently well while Rannvijay is relegated to being a side hero. Zakir Hussain entertains as a Goan cop.

On the flip side, the editing leaves a lot to be desired. It's not just patchy but also quite glaring in the first half of the film.

The best way to enjoy a completely unknown movie is to go with absolutely nil expectations. This is what helps a movie like "Toss", which comes literally unannounced.

GHAJNI 2008 - ACTION THRILLER AT ITS BEST

Ghajni 2008 is a very good film seen on a silver screen after a long time. The Film excells in production values with first rate cinematography. The Film contains quite tense moments with a dose of high octane violence and gore, but it does not repels the cine-goers as these elements form a basis in this revenge flick. The story line is not new but derived from some old films of the west and bollywood has produced many films on similar lines. However, the execution of subject is handled with utmost perfection that leaves a viewer spell-bound during the presentation at the cinema. The Film Ghajni showed Aamir Khans' one of his carriers' best performance with a muscular touch which is a delight to watch. I along with my friends had seen GHAJNI three months after its original release (dec2008) in India. The movie did a good bussiness as my friend owns a cinema hall in Karachi-Pakistan and he was of the of the view that film recovered its import cost in one go and in re-runs made two times did a fairly good turnover. It was breeze of fresh air to see people young and old visited at the four major cinemas where Ghajni was released.

This film could be stated at its best in terms of music, cinematography and sound effects. For us what has promted me / us to see it again was asin only. It is after a long time a bollywood actress touched our hearts. THE FILM IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR ALL WHO WISH SEE A GOOD ACTION THRILLER WITH A DECENT ROMANCE FREE FROM VULGARITY OF ANY SORT. oN A SCALE OF ONE TO 10 IT SHOULD MERIT 9.1/10---eXCELLENT-----sYED tAIMUR ALI AND FRIENDS - kARACHI/PAKISTAN
